The good news is I was not lost, the bad news is I was stuck in the mud! Today was a tough day of riding, 83 miles and most of it was roller coaster hills on a dirt road, some up to a 10% grade. Days like today are slow going and exhausting!
In the last 8 miles of the ride today I had a 1/2 mile section of road that was all mud. It was very difficult to find a path through. In the last 300 feet before I turned off the road, my front tire got bogged down and then stuck in the mud. I could not get my feet unclipped quick enough and I fell with the bike right onto the muddy road. The mud was so thick on that part of the road, that I had to walk the rest of the way…boy was I a mess!
My mid day stop today was in the town of Walnut, Iowa. It is affectionately called the Antique Capital of Iowa. Mary-Beth was doing laundry and shopping so she was not able to meet me. I ate lunch on Main Street sitting in a row of chairs looking at all the action on the street. After I ate the amazing sandwich Mary-Beth made me, I needed to refill my camelback.
I found a really cool diner with a very friendly staff. They let me refill my water while they made me a root beer float. Normally I would share it with Mary-Beth, but she didn’t make it, so I had to eat it all on my own:)
